DIY Souvenir Keepsake Boxes

December 18, 2019

One of the very first things I pinned when I first got a Pinterest account was a set of souvenir boxes from Martha Stewart. I loved the idea, especially because I’m a borderline hoarder when it comes to things like ticket stubs and brochures.

The thing that always tripped me up was the style; my favorite color changes so often, I couldn’t bring myself to commit to a paint color. I ended up buying some boxes from Michaels to put my souvenirs in… and then left them blank and unmarked for five years and three moves before finally finishing them!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a lot of random craft supplies in your basement gathering dust. This year, I’ve decided to get back into crafting and put some of those supplies to good use!

My first project is fun, colorful, and adjustable clay necklaces!

6 DIY Projects for the Fall

6 DIY Projects for Fall

A month or so ago, I had a pair of headphones that was so badly split when I had one ear bud in my ear, the other was dragging on the floor. They still worked fine, but the two sides were no longer connected, and it made running…. awkward. I decided to macrame the two together with some old embroidery thread, and it made me realize how much I miss DIY projects!

I used to do crafts a lot as a kid, and I took the practice back up when I graduated from college. Then, when Sean and I moved to Cincinnati, our budget got much tighter, and I stopped.

But now seems like a great time to get back into it, especially with the temperatures dropping and the coziness kicking in. To celebrate fall, I’ve put together a roundup of 6 DIY projects I’d love to complete this season.

DIY Gold Staples

DIY Gold Staples

This post contains affiliate links that I could make commission off of. All opinions are my own. Learn more.

It’s pretty common knowledge that bloggers love gold everything. Myself included.

When I started redecorating my desk, I opted for Poppin’s white and gold stapler and staple remover. So naturally, I wanted some gold staples to go with them.

I searched and searched on Amazon, but I couldn’t find anything. All the gold staples I saw had really bad reviews or weren’t the right size.

I saw this as a challenge. I was determined to have gold staples, even if it meant I had to make them myself. Which I did.

DIY Gold Upgraded Mouse Pad

It’s back to school season, which can only mean one thing: so much free stuff!

I remember when I was in college, people were always handing out free stuff. Magnets, bracelets, pens, etc. But one thing that I never knew what to do with: free mouse pads. They’re always so ugly, and who wants to be staring at a random logo all day?

Well, I scoured the internet for a solution, and found this awesome tutorial for a black + gold notepad that I just had to try.

DIY Book Safe + Charging Station

DIY Book Safe

I love books. It’s no secret. I’ve always dreamed of having a Beauty and the Beast-esque library of my own someday. So it’s no surprise that I frequent used book sales.

A year or so ago, I found some cool old Reader’s Digest books at the East Grand Rapids Library used book sale. They were touting them as perfect for Pinterest projects, and they weren’t wrong.

I scooped up a beautiful blue book, and I’ve been debating what to do with it ever since. Until I decided I would make it into a lazy version of a DIY book safe and phone charging station to beautify my bedside table.

DIY Painted Coasters

As you may have heard, I got a new Keurig a few weeks ago and I’m #obsessed.

It’s teal (my favorite color) and fits perfectly on the corner of my desk at work. I’m so excited that I can have good coffee at work again!

In celebration, I decided to make some DIY painted coasters to match. My cubicle is grey, grey, and grey, so I love having some stuff to brighten it up a bit. Coasters seemed like the perfect thing to add!

DIY Cat Grass and Catnip Planter

Ever since we adopted Stanley back in December, Val has been a little, well, neglected. She used to have all of our attention, which I think she actually hated. Every day I would come to work showing off new scratch and bite marks that I got from loving Val a little too much. Whoops.

As soon as we got a puppy, though, our focus shifted to him. And Val got more cuddly almost instantly. It was like she was saying “See? Remember what it was like before? REMEMBER HOW GREAT IT WAS?!”

I’m excited to partner with Fancy Feast and their new Broths with Chicken for this post. As part of their #WaysToWow campaign, I’m sharing a fun way to bring Val a place to call her own.

DIY Clay Catchall Dishes

If you’re on Pinterest, you’ve probably seen A Beautiful Mess’s marbled catchall bowls. They’re one of the most recreated DIY projects I’ve seen, and for good reason. They’re super easy and super cute.

I started making my own, but then I got to thinking: how can I make these diy clay bowls my own?

Then it hit me: add some triangles to the top and voila: a cat!

Inexpensive DIY Shoe Racks

Sean and I have been spending the last month or two really improving our apartment, and I’m finally feeling really comfortable with where we are at.

Two of the biggest changes for me, personally, came this past weekend.

Friday, we got our new queen-sized bed. But more on that later.

The second big change was delivered by the one and only Randi Shaffer of Randi with an I.

Easy Hexagon Art

Easy Hexagon Art

Ever since I hung up my hexagon tissue paper “painting,” I’ve wanted to make a matching piece of hexagon art.

Our laundry room door is centered on the wall, and I wanted to be able to put matching hexagon art on either side of the door.

I found a pretty simple solution. I took the same size canvas, the same hexagon hole punch, and the same color scheme and made a random pattern out of scrapbook paper I had lying around.

Painting with Tissue Paper

Painting with Tissue Paper

I spent a good part of my childhood decoupaging. So I was pretty excited when I found a DIY project with tissue paper.

Unlike decoupage, this DIY project uses water instead of Mod Podge.

I saw the idea on Pinterest and was directed back to the Fiskars website, where they listed it as a DIY project for kids.

While I can see the merit of that, I don’t think this should be limited to kids. It’s quick and easy, and you could make so many options with it!

So I guess that’s my personality now.
