Guest Post: A Rundown of the NHL Awards

After a brief hiatus (which felt like forever), Ashley Hufford of Under the Ash Tree is just about done with her work at the NHL for the summer. Which means she’s able to do more blog writing again! 🙌 And how lucky am I that she gets to end her hiatus with a guest post on And Possibly Dinosaurs?! She’s going to share the different NHL Awards and how the winners are decided. They’ll be given out tonight, so be sure to tune in to find out the winners!

Take it away, Ashley!

Stanley Cup Traditions

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past two weeks, you might not know that the Stanley Cup Finals are going on.

In fact, one team might be going home with the Stanley Cup tonight. Game 6 airs at 8 ET tonight, and after Saturday night’s win, Chicago could win it all tonight.

So what happens when someone has won the Stanley Cup? Besides infinite bragging rights, of course.

How the Stanley Cup Playoffs Work

“How the Stanley Cup Playoffs Work” is locked How the Stanley Cup Playoffs Work

Spring is upon us, which can only mean one thing: Stanley Cup playoffs!

I love playoff hockey as much as the next person, but I’ve got an extra special reason to love it this year: we named our puppy after the Stanley Cup!

I’ll be the first to admit that the road to the Stanley Cup playoffs is confusing, to say the least.

So I’m here to break down how teams get to playoffs, and how they win the Stanley Cup.

The Best Names in Hockey

It’s pretty obvious that I like hockey. See here, here, here, and here if you aren’t convinced.

Today, I want to talk about one of my favorite things: the best names in hockey. At least, in the NHL.

And for the record, I don’t mean the best players. I literally mean the best names.

Guest Post: NHL Special Events

I’m so excited to introduce the newest guest blogger on And Possibly Dinosaurs: Ashley from Under the Ash Tree!

She lives in NYC and works at the NHL (#dreamjob), so I invited her to write about the fun NHL special events she gets to go to.

I seriously cannot contain my jealousy of her life.

This weekend is Hockey Weekend Across America, so what better of a time to talk about hockey? (Plus, did you hear the Miracle on Ice team is reuniting in Lake Placid on Sunday?)

Hockey Fundamentals: What Do the Lines on the Ice Mean?

Hockey Fundamentals: What Do the Lines on the Ice Mean?

Before I started liking hockey, I was always so confused by all of the lines on the ice.

I knew there were a lot of lines (and some random circles), but I never understood them, so I always ignored them.

It turns out the lines on the ice are actually really important, and without understanding them, you’re going to have a hard time understanding what the heck is going on in the game.

So I’m here to explain what they mean. These are just the fundamentals though; there might be some extenuating circumstances that aren’t covered in my explanations. But if you want to start understanding the game, these are the fundamentals you’ll need to know. If you want all of the rules, you can find it on the NHL website.

Hockey Fundamentals: Common Penalties

Hockey Fundamentals: Common Penalties

If you haven’t been able to tell from previous posts, I really love hockey. Specifically, the Detroit Red Wings.

In fact, as I write this, I’m wearing a Red Wings sweater while watching them play the Pittsburgh Penguins. (We won.)

However, it wasn’t always this way. In fact, I used to really dislike hockey.

The NHL season goes from October to June, and each team typically plays three times a week. That meant I lost my boyfriend for three nights per week for a solid nine months out of the year while he watched the games with his roommates.

“You realize you could watch it with us, right?” he asked me one night.

But why would I watch the sport with them if I didn’t know any of the rules?

Once Sean taught me the basics, we started watching together and it became our “thing.”

Now I’m obsessed, and  wanted to bring this appreciation to more people by offering some hockey fundamentals.

So I guess that’s my personality now.
