Women in Technology: Why It Matters

May 16, 2017

Representation is incredibly important, but it's not really present in the technology industry. So, why aren't there many women in technology, and how are women working to change that? I'm glad you asked!

Hey everyone! Excited to introduce the newest guest post at And Possibly Dinosaurs. Kate Harveston is here to talk about women in technology, and why representation matters! Enjoy!

Walk into a Silicon Valley office building, or even browse the company’s website to learn about its staff, and you’ll probably wonder where all the women are. The tech industry has long been criticized for having a gender imbalance, but there’s hope!

How to Share Your Real Self Online When You (or Your SO) are Introverted

April 18, 2017

Bloggers have to have a distinct personality to be successful. So how do you share your real self online when you (or your SO) are introverted?

Bloggers are told time and time again that we have to infuse our personality into our brand. And it’s true! To make yourself stand out, it’s important that you share your real self online so your audience understands who the heck they’re talking to.

So, what do you do when you’re super introverted and don’t like talking about yourself? Or maybe your significant other has very intentionally created their personal brand at work, with friends, etc., and doesn’t want you to share the personal, intimate stories that are just for you.

Don’t panic! It’s still totally possible to share your real self online, even when you (or your significant other) are introverted.

How I Stay on Top of Tasks for My Job, Blog, and Life

March 21, 2017

It can be really tough to juggle a blog, a job, and, you know... a life. But it's possible! Here's the organization system I use to stay on top of tasks for everything in my life--without letting anything slip through the cracks!

As a career-focused woman with a side hustle, I’ve got a pretty big to do list.

I’m currently working full-time, running my blog, planning a wedding, and, you know… existing in the world. So I’ve got graphics to design, blog posts to write, cat boxes to clean, clothes to wash, and flowers to pick out.

Yikes.

With all of these things in my life, how does one expect to say on top of tasks and not let everything fall through the cracks? Well, I’ve been working on that for the past few years, and I’ve got some tips to share.

What is Femmephobia? (and How Does It Impact Your Business?)

November 2, 2016

Femmephobia can be a big problem for small business owners. But what is it, and how is it impacting your business?

One of my favorite things about blogging and online business is how many women are empowered to run their own small businesses.

In fact, most of the blogs I read are written by women. And at my monthly blogging meetup, almost all of the attendees are female.

It’s awesome! And so encouraging to see how many women are rocking their businesses.

However, as women, there’s one thing we need to keep in mind when running our businesses, especially online: femmephobia.

Stop Competing. Start Celebrating.

January 14, 2016

It's hard for a woman to be recognized for her work. So there’s no way two women would be recognized, right? The obvious solution is to drag down the other women while you’re scrambling for the top. But here’s the thing: that’s not the solution at all. Click through to find out why you should stop competing and start celebrating!

Women tend to get screwed over a lot. The wage gap, rape culture, and sexual stereotypes put us at a disadvantage against our male counterparts. And that’s not even bringing race into the argument. And while it may take a long time to fix these problems and prevent the unfair disadvantages from occurring, we can make immediate process be changing the way we react to these disadvantages.

Growing up, I believed women were inherently catty. That it was easier to be friends with guys because there would be less drama. Well, the reason for this cattiness and drama is that we think we need to compete with each other to get by. If it’s so hard for a woman to be recognized for her work, then there’s no way two women would be recognized, right? So the obvious solution is to drag down the other women while you’re scrambling for the top.

But here’s the thing: that’s not the solution at all. (Shocker, right?)

Why is “Girl” So Demeaning?

October 30, 2015

Ever had a man call you a girl in a condescending way, and not know why you felt offended? You're not th eonly one. Click through to find out why the word "girl" is so demeaning!

I’m a proud feminist. I love being a woman, and I call people out when they use my gender as an insult.

A few weeks ago, one of my male coworkers asked a group of male coworkers where “you girls” are going for lunch. All the while, I was helping him with something. So, without even turning to look at him, I said, “you seem to be using the world ‘girls’ as an insult, and I don’t appreciate that.”

And yet, I still find myself offended by it. Not just the use of the word, but the word itself.

A different male coworker always calls me the “marketing girl,” and it really rubs me the wrong way. So why is the word girl so demeaning?

How to Create an Inspiring Work Space

I’ve had two different cubicles at my current job, and to start out, they were both far from inspiring. As the sole marketing person with the company, it’s important to have an inspiring work space so I don’t get bogged down by all of the grey and white blah-ness around the rest of the office.

It took me a few tries, but eventually I came up with a work space that I truly find inspiring. So, how did I do it, and how do you make yourself an inspiring work space?

Quitting anything is hard. It’s never going to “feel right.” It’s going to be awkward, and you’re going to doubt yourself. So, how do you know when it’s okay to quit? Click through to find out.

Quitting can be tough. Whether you’re quitting a job, a sport, a hobby, or even your blog, it’s never going to be easy.
