What It’s ACTUALLY Like to Work for a Nonprofit

What It's ACTUALLY Like to Work for a Nonprofit

“Wait, but… if it’s a nonprofit, how do you make any money?”

As a nonprofit employee, I get a lot of questions about my work. And while there are plenty of differences between nonprofit work and for-profit work, there are also a lot of similarities!

How to Tolerate an Intolerable Work Environment

I’m going to preface this post by saying that this content is not inspired by or referencing my current job. So if any of my coworkers are reading this, I’m not talking about you! 😜

We spend about a third of our life at work. With that kind of time investment, you better like your job! Or at least be passably okay with it.

So when you find yourself in an intolerable work environment, what can you do to, well… tolerate it? Because few of us have enough savings to quit without something else lined up (but, you know, #goals), we have to spend at least a little bit of time in this situation before finding something new.

How to Stay Connected to Your Team When You Work Remotely
How to Stay Connected to Your Team When You Work Remotely

Working remotely is an amazing perk. You spend less on your commute, you don’t have to change out of your pajamas (if you don’t want to), and you can shut yourself off from the world to crank out some work.

But, while working remotely is great at first, it can get lonely pretty quickly. When you’re used to working in an office and seeing your coworkers every day, there’s a bit of culture shock as you transition to only talking to your pets.

Feeling connected to your coworkers is such an important part of loving your job. So how can you keep that connection with your team when you don’t see them in the office every day?

What No One Tells You About Working from Home

What No One Tells You About Working from Home

Since moving back to Michigan at the beginning of June, I’ve been working from home 5 days a week. I thought I was prepared for the change—after all, I’d been working from home 2 days per week for almost 2 years, and for a few months last winter I worked from home 4-5 days per week while our office was under construction.

But there can be quite a big difference between “having a space in the office but you work from home regularly” and “you work from home every day and rarely see your coworkers outside of video conferencing.”

In today’s day and age, working from home is becoming more and more normal. And while more people are talking about it, there are definitely some things that no one tells you about working from home.

How to Take Credit for Your Ideas Without Seeming Narcissistic

How to Take Credit for Your Ideas Without Seeming Narcissistic

I find it really hard to take credit for my ideas.

There are a few reasons for this, but I think the biggest is that society tells women that men are the ones with the ideas. Or rather, that men get credit for all of the ideas, even if a woman suggested it first.

How to Plan Your Career Goals When You Don’t Know What You Want to Do for Dinner

How to Plan Your Career Goals When You Don't Know What You Want to Do for Dinner

When I was in college, I was all about creating my five-year plan. I gathered up all of my Post-It notes and my class curriculum so I could figure out what classes I was going to take, when I would take them, and what I could do with all of this knowledge once I graduated.

Now that I’ve been out of school for 5 years, it’s not nearly as simple. There’s no handbook that tells you what steps you should take to have the career you’ve always wanted. So what do you do when you need to create career goals, but you don’t even know what you want to do for dinner?

Unfortunately, it’s not the easiest process. And the goals you create are probably going to change regularly. But that’s okay! Once you’ve asked yourself a few questions, you’ll be able to point yourself in the right direction.

How to Create an Online Portfolio

This post contains affiliate links that I could make commission off of. All opinions are my own. Learn more.

When you consider yourself “a creative” showing off your work samples is necessary if you want to get a job. You can’t just say “I’m a graphic designer” and expect a company to hire you; they need to see what you’re capable of!

An excellent way to do that is an online portfolio! (And often times it’s actually required when you’re filling out the job application.) But if you’re not a web designer, you might not know how the heck to actually make one. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Getting your first full-time job out of college is so exciting. But it’s definitely an adjustment. You have to go from it’s-mostly-acceptable-to-wear-sweatpants-every-day to an environment where you have to be more professional. Way more professional. It’s a bit of a culture shock.

While you might not realize how unprofessional you’re being… your coworkers probably do. Here are some easy ways to be more professional in your 20s.

How to Succeed at Work After a Long Vacation

Taking a long trip can be one of the best experiences. But returning to work after a long vacation? Not quite as nice.

For my honeymoon, I took three full weeks off of work. Getting back into the swing of things was rough, but using a few different tactics, I was able to make the transition a little bit easier.
