Hello and happy Feminist Friday!
In today’s society, women are constantly put at odds against each other. We must compete for the guy, the job, whatever. I really hate this way of thinking. We need to work together and life each other up.
So that’s what I’d like to do today. I want to show off five different women who inspire me every day.
Alexis Jones
I’ve already written about I AM THAT GIRL here and here, but I cannot get enough so I’m talking about it again. I haven’t had the fortune to meet Alexis, but I heard her speak at the Invisible Children Fourth Estate Leadership Summit back in 2013. She’s the most genuine person, and truly wants to help women find their authenticity.
If you haven’t already, please go and follow her on Instagram. She’s got a super fun personality and is inspiring in all of her posts.
Sophia Bush
Whenever I ask people how they’ve found out about I AM THAT GIRL, their response is always the same: Sophia Bush. Not only is she an amazing actress, but she has a kind heart and uses her fame as a platform to bring about positive social change. She’s such a rockstar.
She’s got a truly kind heart and is one of the nicest people I’ve had the fortune of meeting.
My Mom
What kind of a daughter would I be if I didn’t include my mom on this list? I’ve already explained several things I’ve learned from my mom, but I have to toot her horn again.
My mom left the security of her job because she wasn’t comfortable in the working environment. She wasn’t appreciated for the rock star she is, so she left. She’s now working part-time in the service industry and loves it. She’s seriously so inspiring.
My Sister
My sister Cara and I are, well, sisters. We love each other to death, but if we spend too much time together, we want to tear each other’s heads off.
That being said, she doesn’t cease to inspire me. She did AmeriCorps right out of college, living well below the poverty line. She’s fluent in Spanish, and works for the Lt. Governor of Colorado. She also doesn’t take anyone’s shit and speaks her mind. It can get her into trouble, but I also really admire that confidence.
Angela Morales
I have the good fortune of talking to Angela basically every day via Google Chat. She’s a contributor for APD and runs her own blog, The Full Tummy. Oh, and she’s launching her own bakery.
She’s so motivated and positive, which I love. Sure, we talk about stuff that bothers us, but that’s what we’re friends for. She inspires me every day because she’s always looking to learn and grow as an entrepreneur and as a person.
Lexie Spielmaker
Lexie was one of my first friends growing up, and we still talk. We don’t talk every day, necessarily, but that’s because she moved out to Arizona to pursue her degree at Arizona State. Which is awesome. But she comes back to Michigan in a few weeks and I’m super excited!
She’s one of the most genuinely nice people I’ve ever met. There are only a few times in the nearly 20 years I’ve known her where I’ve seen her upset. Two of those years, we lived together. All of that positivity is pretty inspiring.
Who inspires you? Let me know in the comments!
So, uh, I’m crying. I didn’t expect that at all! Woman, you are so inspiring and helpful and kind and funny and it’s late so adjectives aren’t coming to me. Thank you for adding me to your list, you are truly a fantastic friend and a great addition to my life.
<3 Love you!
What a great post! You’re inspired by some wonderful women. I love when women lift each other up rather than all of the crazy drama stuff. Stacie xo
My sister too inspires me, but I also have to agree with Sophie Bush.. because she is just down right amazing on every level. Very sweet post, it most definitely brought a lot of happiness to people!
Love this post concept! I honestly hadn’t heard of Sophia Bush or Alexis Jones, but I’m creeping on them via social media to see if I can get inspired, too. (I never got into anything Bush has been in, apparently… and I didn’t have ‘I am that girl’ on my radar, but it is now!) Many thanks for the reading suggestions. 🙂
Sophia Bush is hands down one of my favorite people in Hollywood. She’s incredibly inspiring and down to earth, but then she’s fearless about being open and bold when it comes to the causes she’s close to.
I’d have to say my mom too 🙂 She is that woman who is always reaching out to those who are alone. She is so loving!
I went into this thinking “Sophia Bush” and you did not disappoint. 🙂
