Now that Memorial Day is behind us, it’s time for summer reading! I’m a big fan of reading year-round, but there’s something special about picking up a book during the warm summer months.
I’ve gotten a head start on my summer reading list already, but here are the books I’m excited to dive into over the next few weeks!
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, George R. R. Martin

Okay, full disclosure: I already finished the 3 novelas that make up A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. But they were too good not to include!
The stories are by George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, but they take place about 100 years before the beginning of A Game of Thrones. It follows Dunk, a knight, a knight, and his squire Egg, aka Aegon V Targaryen, Dany’s great-grandfather.
They’re so fun and light-hearted, especially compared to ASOIAF. Plus, there are so many little things to pick up on that give more meaning to the original series!
Fire & Blood, George R. R. Martin

Continuing the GRRM theme, I checked out his newest book, Fire & Blood, from the library! It’s a history of the Targaryen family, whose words are Fire & Blood.
I can’t get enough of A Song of Ice and Fire right now, so don’t mind me while I read all the books.
Happier at Home, Gretchen Rubin

On a lighter note, I also checked out Gretchen Rubin’s Happier at Home from the library. I’ve been really interested in habit forming lately, so I’m excited to read about the tips Gretchen has for being happier in everyday life.
Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty

Once I finish up my George R. R. Martin streak and the library books I’ve got checked out, my goal is to read a bunch of books I already own (and preferably pass them along to someone else once I’m done!).
I picked up Big Little Lies from a Little Free Library back in Cincinnati, and I’ve been dying to read it! I don’t know much about it, other than the fact that it’s a super popular HBO show. I’m doing everything I can to avoid trailers for season 2 because I want to be as surprised as possible!
Every Heart a Doorway, Seanan McGuire

I picked up Every Heart a Doorway from the library in Cincinnati after Amber Burns raved about it. And then… Stanley ate a chunk out of it so I had to pay for it. But that means I got to keep it! I realized it’s actually the beginning of a series, so I decided to hold off on it until I reread all of George R. R. Martin’s books. Now that that’s (almost) done, I’m going to read this one and then the rest of the series!
My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult

I’ve heard amazing things about Jodi Picoult’s books, so I always picked them up when I saw them at the library book sale… but I’ve never actually read them. This summer I’m going to finally break into one with My Sister’s Keeper!
The Time Keeper, Mitch Albom

And finally, a Mitch Albom book! I’ve loved everything I’ve read of his, so I didn’t hesitate to pick up an autographed copy of The Time Keeper at a local library book sale for a whopping $2. But, just like all of my Jodi Picoult books, it’s sat around unread for years. Not any more!
I’m so excited to spend some time reading in my sun room with the windows open this summer! What’s on your summer reading list?
