Capsule wardrobes are super popular right now, especially in the blogging community. If you haven’t heard of them, it’s when you clean out your closet and take out everything but the bare essentials. Then, you bring in color and trends through your accessories.
Well, now that I’m sharing my apartment (read: closet) with Sean, I figured it was time to give it a try.
I didn’t stick to any rules, per se, but I took out trendier pieces and anything I didn’t wear regularly.
I’ve still got some color and pattern, but there’s a whole lot less of it.
After all, there are only so many days between laundry cycles. How many pieces of clothing do you really need? Especially if you accessorize and layer well. Shoot, I wore the same dress 10 times in one month and no one noticed.
I’ve gotten rid of more than half of my wardrobe. Wowza.
I’d like to highlight my five favorite pieces. These ones weren’t even close to being considered when I was getting rid of stuff.
1. The Navy Gingham Shirt
I absolutely love this shirt. It’s comfortable and fits pretty well. It’s great for Casual Friday, but I haven’t quite figured out how to make it work the rest of the week. Definitely on my list of things to do.
I got mine from Gap, but it’s no longer available. Here are some alternatives:
2. The Little Black (with a Touch of White) Dress
Randi showed me this dress from H&M a while back, and I love it. It fits really well, and it’s a great length for work. It’s also fitted enough that I can layer tops and bottoms over it. Hence why I was able to get away with wearing it 10 times in the same month.
Here are similar dresses, both professional and casual:
3. The Animal Print Top
This one I got in Denver while visiting my sister. Yes, there’s an H&M right around the corner from my apartment, but it doesn’t have two stories like the one in Denver! So naturally, I went twice in one weekend. This is one of my best purchases. I can dress it up or dress it down, depending on my needs. My favorite look is wearing it on top of my LBD. Plus, animal print is a neutral, right?
It’s of course sold out, but here are some similar styles:
4. The Black Skinny Jeans
I got these jeans practically for free, and but I would have loved them with or without the good price. They’re a great staple, especially for Casual Fridays. They’re good quality, and are much more professional than my other skinny jeans.
These are luckily still available. The first link is for the jeans I have, but here are some other options as well:
5. The Black Circle Skirt
Another A+ recommendation from Randi. I wear my black circle skirt all the time. Best $24 I’ve ever spent. It can be casual or professional, and it pairs well with almost anything. Including the LBD and the animal print shirt. My only complaint: no pockets.
It’s, of course, no longer available, but here are some that are:
What are your favorite pieces of clothing?
Dangnabbit Caitlin, this is why I don’t usually read fashion posts…I saw that Ann Taylor circle skirt and immediately had to have it. So I hope you’re getting an affiliate kickback. 😉 I so rarely splurge on clothes but I’m starting a new job soon and have been trying to stock up on versatile pieces in neutral colors, and it looks like you can dress this one up or down. Hopefully it’ll be a good fit! The black skinnies are super cute too, but I have to pace my new clothes spending! Haha.
Haha! I’m the same way. That’s why I try to avoid malls / stores in general. Especially Target. I seriously love that skirt, too! Mine is a bit short, but that Ann Taylor one looks like it’s the perfect length for work. Let me know how you like it! 🙂
Any pair of Old Navy Pixie Pants. I can’t get enough. They’re great for work, home, going out, or brunch. They’re a great cross between leggings and slacks and I will wear them for eternity….. or until they discontinue them and I run out of suitable ones to wear in public.
Let’s hope they never discontinue them! Seriously.
Yep! And it works. I did two loose ruled capsules and now I’m just trying to make the practices a habit in my closet. It’s worked really well for me. I swear by my navy gingham shirt too. It’s one of my favorite closet pieces.
I’m glad to hear it works! I’m slowly transitioning, and I’m really happy with how it’s worked out so far.
