I absolutely love traveling. Whether I go to the next city over or the other side of the world, I really enjoy experiencing something completely out of the norm.
But what happens when you can’t travel? Whether it’s because you can’t swing it financially or because you have too many obligations at home, it can be really difficult to get out and about.
Luckily, there’s this marvelous thing called a staycation that gives you the best of both worlds, so to speak.
So, what are some ways to have a staycation wherever you are? Here are my favorite staycation ideas. Only one thing is required–bring your camera with you everywhere!
- Go to the beach.
- Go to a museum.
- Go to a completely different part of town and explore.
- Hit up antique shops.
- Eat at a restaurant you’ve never been to before.
- Picnic.
- Visit the zoo.
- Visit a local boutique shop.
- Go on a hike.
- Turn on the sprinkler in your back yard and run through it.
- Visit a local tourist-y spot.
- Go to a local amusement park.
- Geocaching.
- Hit up a local festival.
- Go paintballing.
- Go to a sporting event.
- Check out what’s playing at the local (live) theatre.

- Look up historical places nearby.
- Spend all day at the library or bookstore.
- Camp in your backyard.
- Go to the spa.

- Stay at home and completely unplug.
- Hit up a craft sale.
- Go to the drive-in.
- Set up a drive-in movie in your own back yard.
- Go on a bike ride.
- Do laser tag.
- Take an exercise class.
- Have friends over for a barbeque.
- Go to a local water park.
- Stay at a local bed and breakfast.
- Go on a tour of garage sales.
- Have a DIY-filled weekend.

- Go bowling.
- Play some mini-golf.
- Go to an indoor trampoline park.
- Have a tea party.
- Visit a nearby small town and explore.
- Go to several local wine tasting rooms.
- Visit the planetarium.

How do you spend your staycations?
Great ideas! I love the idea of being a tourist in my own town and doing some kind of tour. A lot of these would be great with my kids. Thanks!
Let me know if you try any of them! 🙂
I’m attempting to make this summer more of an exploration of my city so this post gave me lots of good ideas to add to my list!
I’m glad I was able to help! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Great list. We do a lot of staycations. Living near Seattle and Portland, there’s just so much to do close by. I really want to get back in to geocaching too. Also, your blog name is the best EVER.
I want to visit Seattle and Portland SO badly! And thank you!
Great tips! I can’t travel that much this summer but I still want to enjoy summer anyway. I’m definately going to include some hiking and fancy cocktails in my summer 🙂
That sounds like a blast, even though you can’t travel much!
I’ve wanted to host a murder mystery dinner, but attending would be fun, too. I’ve never done either. I also really like the idea of just going to a new part of town and exploring. Great list!
I haven’t gone to / hosted a murder mystery dinner, either! I really want to go to one this summer because they sound like a blast.
I love mini-golf. I am the world champ at mini-golf! This is a great list. We do these things all the time except tea parties because I hate tea. We also don;t do laser tag because I have a fear of being chased.
Hah! Laser tag definitely gives me bad anxiety.
Great ideas! Our favorite things are fishing and camping 🙂
That’s awesome! I’m not the best at fishing (I’m much too impatient) but camping is so much fun!
I love all your ideas. As a new travel blogger I have really neglected my own hometown while writing posts on the more exotic places I get to visit but I will use your list to remind myself of all the great things that Houston has to offer (once it dries out after all our rain) Thanks for Sharing
I’ve been thinking the same thing, Sue! I haven’t been doing many travel posts lately because I haven’t gone anywhere, but I need to do more about my hometown! 🙂 Good luck with the flooding and stay safe!
I love staycations!! These are some really awesome ideas! Great post for the summer!!
