Being in a bad mood is one of the worst feelings. What’s even worse? Starting the day in a bad mood.
However, I may have figured out how to beat it.
So what’s my secret? Well, it takes a little bit of practice, and it can’t be used on it’s own. But it’s actually pretty simple.
When you wake up, tell yourself you’re in a good mood.
Make a conscious effort to be in a good mood, and eventually you’ll believe yourself.
This doesn’t always work, but I’ve found it works most of the time, especially when I tell myself I’m in a good mood while I’m too tired to convince myself otherwise.
I’ve also experienced this working at other times of the day. I just stop, tell myself I’m being ridiculous, and put myself in a good mood. It’s not easy, but the more I try, the more successful I get. It’s all about being more conscious of your feelings and why you feel the way you do.
But again, this can’t be your only strategy. I recommend doing other things as well, like having a cup of coffee, making your bed, and in general feeling productive first thing in the morning.
I’ve also heard that literally jumping out of bed has a positive impact on not only your mood, but also your energy level first thing in the morning. But, you know, be conscious of your neighbors if you’re in an apartment that isn’t on the first floor.
What do you do to keep yourself in a good mood first thing in the morning? Let me know in the comments!
My dad used to tell me, “you can’t be in a bad mood if you’re smiling”. It used to really make me angry when he said it, but it was so true. I’d smile and instantly felt better.
I love it! I’ve also tried forcing myself to smile and it ends up working! Crazy.
I try to do this too! It sort of goes with the “fake it till you make it” attitude. Along for trying to be in a better mood, I use this when I’m feeling low on energy.
That’s a great idea, Anna! I hadn’t thought about using it for low energy situations, too. I’ll have to try it!
Chocolate. 😀 or, exercise! Or just reminding myself of a good memory. These are great tips!
I have a really hard time exercising in the morning! Same with meditation. I’ve heard it’s great, but I fall asleep every time. 🙂
How simple, yet effective! I can see how this would work…I am going to try it the next time I wake up cranky lol.

Let me know if it works for you, Cindy! 🙂
Mondays are hard to jump out of bed and be in a good mood. Usually if I can get a good shower to wake me up and refresh me it helps!
Ooh, same! I just hate having to go through the process of blow-drying my hair and everything after–I feel like that makes me cranky again! Haha!
I think there’s some truth to that. Having a better outlook really does help you have a better day .
I think so! 🙂
Music usually helps me. All it takes is an infectious song to get me moving and in a better mood.
Agreed! I love dancing around in the morning with my puppy. 🙂
To get myself in good mood…I first need to be calm. Normally scripture study or inspirational messages will do this for me.
That’s great, Jess! I agree, being calm really helps.
Great tip, but there are days where it just doesn’t work, lol. It’s something I’ve been making a conscious effort to beat lately. Thanks for the tips!
So true! Sometimes you’re just in too bad of a mood and can’t snap out of it. Which is never fun.
