Hello hello! I’ve taken most of the summer off from the blog, but I’m excited to be back for a check-in on my 101 in 1001 list! If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a list of 101 things I’d like to accomplish in 1,001 days, or about 2.75 years. This is my third iteration of a 101 in 1001 list! It started on October 9, which means we’re now about 300 days in. Let’s see how I’ve done so far!
6 Goals Completed
While I’m still below where I want to be (ideally I’d have 10 completed each check-in), I’m happy with the progress I’ve made!
2. Learn how to jumpstart a car.
Thanks to barely driving over the last year and a half, we had to jumpstart Sean’s car in July. I took the opportunity to learn how to do it instead of just having Sean do it, and it turns out it’s not terribly complicated!
23. Convert the downstairs fireplace to gas.
I’m so glad we have this one crossed off! We just finished it at the end of July. We now have a functioning fireplace in our living room, and they replaced the hearth tile with the same tile we have around our upstairs fireplace! Looking forward to sitting by the fire this fall and winter.
30. Replace the ceiling light in the bedroom.
Just in time to have guests! I broke the light fixture in 2020 and it took us until May of 2021 to replace it, but it now matches the rest of the light fixtures in the house.
33. Plant a garden.
We were going to skip a garden in 2021 because we didn’t have the mental energy to figure out what all we needed to do, but then one of our neighbors put out a bunch of free vegetable plants to take! We used old deck boards to make a garden box and planted a bunch of red peppers, tomatoes, and basil.
75. Learn how to style my natural curls.
I got my hair cut in May (finally! first haircut since 2019!), and had the bright idea to ask my stylist how best to style my natural curls. It’s different than I expected, but not terribly hard! Now I’m just working on perfecting it, but I at least know what to do.
86. Read the Little House series.
I ended up zipping through these in the spring. I’m not sure I recommend them (Little Town on the Prairie features a minstrel show… pass), at least I know now.
11 Goals in Progress
Plus I’ve got lots more goals in progress! Here’s everything I’ve done for incomplete goals since the last check-in.
5. Listen to all (previously unplayed) episodes of 99% Invisible.
This one is still going to take a bit since there are more than 450 episodes, but I’m in the 200s now! And I’m learning really interesting stuff, so this is a fun goal to work on. Once I catch up, I plan to do a roundup of my favorite episodes.
6. Get to level 1 in all Spanish lessons on Duolingo.
I haven’t made a lot of progress since the last check-in. I’ve been practicing lessons I’ve already completed, but not starting new ones. Earlier this week I started some new lessons, though, so I’m getting there! I’m still juuuuust beyond checkpoint 4.
10. Max out 401Ks, IRAs, and HSAs for me and Sean in a single calendar year.
We’re so so so close! I’m hoping that we can cross this off the list by the end of the year.
11. Boost our emergency fund to $15k.
Every month we’re setting more aside!
16. Finish Ring Fit.
This is my main form of exercise, and I’ve been trying to play three times a week! I took a large chunk of July off for various reasons, but I’m hoping to get back into it soon.
34. Improve the entertainment space in the backyard.
We’re so so so close to this one! Sean refinished the deck earlier this summer. All we need is the new outdoor furniture we ordered, which is being delivered tomorrow!
59. Visit 10 new-to-me places in Kalamazoo.
Two more to go! We’re now at 8. Since the last check-in, we visited 4 new places: Husted’s Farm Market, Mason Jar Plant Sop, The Cove, and Asylum Lake Preserve.
66. Cook my way through an entire cookbook.
I’ve made 8 more recipes since the last check-in! I’m at 16 of 103 now. I’ve been enjoying trying out new recipes—some are just okay, but I’ll definitely reach for some of them again.
72. Learn how to make 15 classic cocktails from memory.
I’ve added two more cocktails to my repertoire: sidecar and tequila sunrise!
89. Catch all bugs, fish, and sea creatures in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
I’m so so so close! I literally just have one fish left to catch: the mahi-mahi. I’ve got all the sea creatures and bugs, though!
90. Get all 6 golden tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Once I get that mahi-mahi, I’ll be able to cross this off! I’ve got everything except the golden fishing pole, and I need to catch all of the fish to get it.
22 goals down, 79 to go! Slowly but surely crossing them off my list.
