September was a big reading month for me! I was feeling a bit behind on my goal of reading 52 books this year, so I challenged myself to read 6 books in a month, and I succeeded!
The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan
The Heir Affair is the sequel to The Royal We, which I read back in May. And just like the first book in the series… it was a solid fine. Both books follow an American, Becca, as she falls in love with the heir to the British throne, Nicholas. I wish I cared more about the characters, but I just… don’t. It’s hard to read this book after falling in love with Red, White, and Royal Blue and the American Royals series, because the character development is far better in those.

Becoming by Michelle Obama
I tried reading the hardcover book of Becoming and to be honest just couldn’t get into it. But then I requested the audiobook from the library, and that was much better. Michelle Obama reads it, so it’s like she’s talking to you as a friend. And honestly, who doesn’t want to be friends with Michelle Obama? (I’ll even forgive her for mispronouncing Accra.)
In the book, she talks about life growing up in the South Side of Chicago, going to college, losing loved ones, navigating her career, meeting Barack, and becoming First Lady. It gives really interesting perspective into who she is as a person… outside of the cultural phenomenon that she has become.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
By the middle of September, I was reading two books, both of which were… heavy. Then RBG died, and I knew I needed something light to help me escape the hellhole that is 2020. Enter: Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’ve owned the books in this series for a long time; I’m just barely too old to have read them when the books first came out, but I’ve wanted to read them for a while.
It follows Percy Jackson, a preteen in New York City who discovers he’s the son of a god. Someone has stolen Zeus’s lightning bolt, and he’s been chosen to find out who did it and get it back to Zeus before the summer solstice. It’s a light, fun read that’s perfect escapism for right now.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
The next book in the Percy Jackson series is The Sea of Monsters. Someone is poisoning Camp Half-Blood, the camp where Percy trains, and he needs to find the solution. Plus, his best friend Grover is missing, and he’s pretty sure he’s in trouble. Another quick, light read!

The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan
To be honest, I read the Percy Jackson books in such quick succession that I don’t remember too much of The Titan’s Curse, but I know that I enjoyed it! It continues the overarching storyline from the entire series (which I’ll avoid writing about so not to spoil anything!) and there are some badass women in it. It’s probably my least favorite of the series, but I know I enjoyed it a lot.

The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan
The Battle of the Labyrinth, on the other hand, was my favorite of the series! (Which I can officially say now that I’ve finished the fifth book… but more on that in the October reading recap.) In order to continue the quest that stretches over the entire series, Percy, Grover, and Annabeth have to navigate through the Labyrinth, which sits just below the surface of the entire United States, and constantly changes.
